Unusual shaped picks!
Forget anything you thought a guitar pick was supposed to look like! This section covers unusual shaped picks and also picks with unusual 'features' such as holes, bends, and anything else I find! Keep scrolling down because there are loads of different makes on this page!
Enjoy!
*Rather than clogging up this page with hundreds of photos and pages of history/information, I've just provided a brief description on here and now moved most of the photos/history/details for each pick on to their own separate pages under Modern Picks if they are still available to buy. Some picks are now 'out of print' so are just on this page.

Raptor "R"
Wow! What can I say about these? Firstly, the photos do them absolutely no justice. There is no way to describe just how lovely these things feel to hold.
They are created using the same sophisticated design and modelling techniques employed to produce formula one racing cars and they certainly feel that way. From the moment you pick it up you can feel the quality and work that has gone in to producing these picks.
For a full look at Raptor pick go to myRaptor page under Moder Picks here.

Porky's Pick
This is a lovely Porky Freeman pick. Patented in the 60’s, it’s a very bizarre thumb/flat pick combination. It came with an A4 instruction sheet with roughly sketched diagrams explaining the different combinations of how you can insert an elastic band through the holes to vary the grip!
Quilla Hugh "Porky" Freeman (born June 29, 1916, Vera Cruz, Missouri, United States) is an American Western swing performer, bandleader, and songwriter. He is also an electric guitar pioneer and inventor.
In the 1940s he led the Californian based band, the 'Porky Freeman Trio'. One of his early hits, "Porky's Boogie Woogie on Strings", began rock and roll's evolution out of Western swing. As a session musician he backed many of the popular musicians of the time.
His early experimentation with the electric guitar led to several patents for the instrument. One of the patents, 'Single Pickup Frequency Control For String Instrument', led to legal wrangling with Fender.

Hornby Tiger Grip
I feel very privileged to have one of these picks. They were made in the UK in the 90's but never sold! It is attached to a letter form the owner of the company, stating that it never sold, but that he still owns the molding tool.

Swiss Picks
THE SWISS PICK EQUATION
Off center holes + raised edges = superior grip! Simple!!
My ancestors in Somerset, UK were pioneering Cheddar cheesemakers (Joseph Harding) so these really appealed to me! They even took cheese over to Australia which became known as Bodalla cheese.
The holes provide a perfect grip & making it into a cheese wedge is pure genius! They're made using injection molded Delrin/Acytyl. Like the Raptor Picks, Pete has chosen not to outsource to China and kept it local, so the Swiss Picks are manufactured in Los Angeles.
There's a brilliant interview with Pete from Swiss Picks on Effects Bay here or click on the photo to go to Swiss Picks.

Dallas (Moly)
Very rare vintage pick that received a U.S. Patent (U.S. D292,413) in 1987. This model is pre-patent. It's made of a Molybdenum and Nylon blend which actually feels horrible to play with - really scratchy. As far as I'm aware, it is the only pick made from this. It was made my an inventor called Dallas Slusser who's company was Dallas Enterprises.
As you can see, the nodes, which are 'ornamental', are really prominent on both sides and actually give it quite a good grip and has aconvex & concave edge.
1-1/16" wide
1-1/2" long
.86mm thick playing tip
3.66mm thick at nodes

DuoPlec
_These unusual picks have two blades that can easily be rotated. A soft
pick for rhythm, giving a crisp bright sound and a firm pick for lead.
The good thing about having two in one is obviosly being able to change
during a song.
All the way from Australia, the picks are moulded in Nylon and come in three gauges: .38mm, .46mm, .54mm. Click on a photo to go to their website.

Triplet
Gibson Tripik
In 1979 Gibson advertised this pick in 4 colours, white, cream, orange and black. Each was made of a different material and each set came in both point up and point down, so there were 8 variations! This was the only time that Gibson offered this shape as it never proved succesful. A nice gimmick but not what guitar players wanted.
Herdim Triple Sided Nylon - 3-Gauges
Günter Dick invented the 3-in-1 back in the early 1960's. The pick was a big hit and huge amounts were sold. The 3-gauged-pick was used by scores of guitarists throughout their lives.
One tip is heavy, the other two are medium and thin.
The 3-in-1 picks were available in three different versions, made out of three different types of nylon. One was a regular nylon, the second a harder and the third version a softer nylon. The picks were colour-coded.
The colour-code:
Yellow - very soft nylon.
Red - regular nylon.
Blue - hard and sturdy nylon.
These are still available from Dictum.

CMT Triple Play
This is a graphite pick that came out around 2001 and has three gauges from .44mm to .96mm. It also features raised dots to distiinguish each gauge, supposedly making it easy for the guitarist to 'feel' which side they were playing with without having to check. As with lots of picks by smaller companies, it is no longer made.
Caron Multi Pick
This is a really chunky multi-tiered pick from the 60's. When I first saw it, I assumed like many others, that it's purpose was to emulate a 12-string guitar. Not so. Apparently according to it's patent (1967), the purpose of the widely spread points is to enable 2 strings that aren't next to one another, to be played simultaneously! It could also be snapped apart and extended with a special kit to add several more points, making it even bulkier! Wonder why it never caught on? ;-)
Gave this a little play to see what it's like. Sounds ok, nothing unusual. It has quite a full tone when strumming, but when picking it does actually play the two adjacent strings so not quite sure of the advantage here. Maybe it needs an extra spacer to be able to play two non adjacent strings.
Patent No. 3,304,826
“To provide a multi-pick structure which is capable of simultaneously sounding two strings on a musical instrument which are not adjacent to each other”

Stash Picks
Dual Guitar Pick
Simplicity in itself! Basically two standard picks with a spacer sandwiched in between! It produces a nice richer sound and is easy to play with. Using already made picks, the picks are then hand finished in Norway by Marc Moravia. They are also available made with Cactus picks.
See my Dual Pick page for the different types which will shortly include some new models about to go on the market soon.

Strum Rose 'Strummer'
Jim Dunlop made these around the 90's. They were supposed to emulate a 12 string guitar. For more photos of them, see my Dunlop page here.
StarPik
_
After two and a half years of
designing and critiquing his invention, Glenn Hautamaki has introduced
the Starpik: a multi-functional guitar pick that possesses a different
thickness on each of the four points.
"I put four of the average pick thicknesses on one pick. The thicker ones are moulded one across from the other, as are the two thinner ones, so when you're playing guitar and you want to change your tone or pick for the next strum, you're always close to one that will work," explains Hautamaki. The carrying card that comes with the Starpik can double as a case for guitar …
This is a really beautiful, smallish pick! It feels quite delicate. It was invented by Hautamaki; Glenn J. (Hamilton, ON, CA), Lyell; Raymond R. (Hamilton, Ontario, CA) . This one is pre-patent. The U.S. Patent (no. 6,777,602) was granted on August 17th 2004.

Sik Pik
_
What makes Sik Piks special is that they are made to be played 'on the edge'! I had never come across this until my friend told me that he often plays 'on the edge'. There are 3 varying degrees of angles depending on how parallel you hold your pick to the strings.
See my separate Sik Pik page for full details on the Sik Pik.

Pointless Picks
Invented by Douglas Larsen in Michigan in 2007, these feature a raised grip ring which allows the pick to be gripped lightly without the risk of dropping.
The overall round shape improves accuracy by eliminating the traditional point that constantly rotates while playing. The end result is a pick that greatly increases accuracy while virtually eliminating dropping. They are low friction made from Acetal which is a highly crystaline engineering polymer. |
Django Button
_John Pearse always was a fan of the
outstanding guitarist of the "Hot Club of Paris", Django Reinhardt,
whose 100th Birthday was just celebrated by fans worldwide! And when
John had the opportunity to be at a concert with Raoul Reynoso or John
Jorgenson, they knew he loved "Nuages" and would often honor him by
playing it! Thank you Raoul! Thank you John! He always said that Django played with a trouser fly button as a pick...so JP honour him with their John Pearse® DJANGO® BUTTONS! They are .056" thick, made of Heavy Viscoloid [a type of celulose] and have a wonderful sound!
Sun Pickz
These are really simple little picks! Sun Pickz are made of durable Delrin®. They create a unique sound when the patented serrated edge is strummed on a slight angle against the strings. Unique shape, Unique concept, Unique sound. They have a very harsh sound - very trebley. No good for jazz!
They were created quite accidentally. Dan from Sun Pickz was visiting family in California and had taken his travel guitar. After pulling it out he realized that he had no pick. It was time for necessity to be the mother of invention. Next to him was a box of Puffs. He thought cardboard would have to do as a pick. So he ripped off a corner and randomly strummed the serrated edge against the strings. It was rough, but he clearly heard a unique sound. He then made a pencil sketch, put it in his wallet, and proceeded on with California. Upon returning home, Dan was off and running. He took a standard pick, and with nail clippers, serrated the edge all the way around!!!!! Snip, snip, snip!!! After a few strums, he knew he was on to something great. The rest of the story includes a lot of trial and error and experimenting.

What can I say about these?!
I absolutely love that Pick Guy is making these amazingly unique picks! It's not often you come across someone who keeps coming up with so many novel designs! Find him on eBay and give him your support.

TOOTH PICK!! Of course!
This pick is 1.25in X 1in. They are 1.00mm thick, but feel a bit thinner than that,
due to the unique shape. THESE ARE 100% PLAYABLE!
Take a close look ... the top of the tooth has 2 tips.
The tips are the exact shape of the tip of a 351 guitar pick.

FOOTBALL PICK
The picks are 1.00mm and Delrin.
This is really a dual tipped "jazz" pick!
Both tips of the football picks are the exact shape of a jazz pick.
Also, the raised lettering and molded in laces add texture, for added grip.

BAT PICK
The picks are .88mm and Delrin.
The picks are slightly smaller than a standard 351 size pick (in height only).
The bat shape is molded into the pick, and raised up off the surface of the pick. There are also some tiny spikes molded into each side, and a small "pickguy.com" tag molded into one side, adding a nice GRIP to the picks.

Although 1.25mm, they feel a bit thinner than that, due to the unique shape.
The narrow tip can be helpful for speed picking, and the unique dual tipped side would
be fun for the innovative guitartist to experiment with. The raised lettering helps with grip,
along with the thumb to pointer finger contact (due to the V cut).

BAM! POW! PICKS

Inspired by comic books and old Super Hero shows & movies, the picks feature the classic
POW! and BAM! captions everyone is familar with. NOTE - POW! is on one side and BAM! is on the other side.
The lettering and caption bubble/star are molded in the pick, so it is raised up off the surface of the pick (adding a nice GRIP on each side). And, as you can see, the top of the pick
was molded in the shape of the caption bubble/star, making these truly UNIQUE guitar picks.

ZZ Top
Everly
Using the standard 351 size pick, Phil Everly (of The Everly Brothers) added a star shaped cutout where your thumb and finger meet, for the perfect no-slip grip. This was originally a 5 pointed star, but this proved uncomfortable, so was changed to the 10 point. Prior to developing these picks, the Everly brothers worked for Joe Moshay hand finishing his picks. It's clear to see that the Moshay pick is the inspiration behind their design! See here.

Blue Magic
Yep, this is really a guitar pick!
I couldn't work out the reasoning behind the stem at first. I thought someone had just bought a coffee 'stirrer' at a motorway service station and tried using it as a pick!
But...it is indeed a genuine pick, made in France. The thinking behind it is that you can easily alternate between using a pick and finger picking by keeping the stem in between your fingers so you can keep hold of the pick yet move it out the way to use your fingers. I love picks that 'think outside the box' and are innovative! Just when you think there can't possibly be anything new, someone invents something completely different! Brilliant! Snake Pick
These are an amazing revolutionary design!!! It's always a pleasure to see someone thinking outside the box and trying something completely new.
They come in 4 different coil sizes, 13mm,15mm,17mm and 19mm. Soon to be released are in between sizes that are 14, 16, 18 and 20mm. Instructions on how to measure are on the website. The SnakePick is available in 3 different gauges. The gauges are Soft, Medium and Hard. This is reflected by the colour of the SnakePick. Red being Soft, Blue being Medium and Purple being Hard. The SnakePicks gauge density is not set by a measurement like the standard pick but set by the consistency of the plastic material.
This revolutionary idea works magnificently and allows the guitarist to have much more definition and control over his or her playing without losing tone through alteration of their technique.
They're based in Australia but it only took about a week for them to arrive to the UK!

Bog Street
Since Günter Dick invented the triple pick for Herdim, in the 60s, there have been a few variations brought out & they continue to be popular. (Top tip: Don't Google 'Dick' and 'Pick' in the same search. It does not bring up guitar picks!)
These Bog Street LEAP Series picks are quality-engineered, tactile & aesthetically pleasing! They feature an ergonomic central grip area with 3 different pick sides. The grip area has a contoured feature on one side designed to provide stability and comfort to the thumb, and the opposite side allows freedom of motion and control for the index finger. The hole and index indentations create contact between the thumb and index finger to improve the feel and comfort during play. They come in a neatly designed, little card wallet too!

Switch Pick
It's a coincidence to receive another version of a triple pick straight after the Bog Street Pick!
This one reminds me of an inverted version of a Herdim 3-Gauge or an Awe-in-One pick (above).
I love the size of them - nice and neat! & the added hole, means they can be kept on a keyring or neckchain!
You can change effortlessly between 0.6mm and 1.2mm thickness without having to change picks, whilst the serrated edge offers a third tonal option to your sound.
MATERIALS - The Switch Pick comes in two materials:
Nylon 66 (red and black) - A more flexible material which produces a warm tone
Acetal (green - though I'd say it looks more petrol blue!) - Slightly stiffer, which produces a brighter tone and enables faster playing styles.
