Sonokeling
The fourth hardest wood in the Timber tones range with a Janka hardness rating of 3080 lbf.
This is a readily available rosewood (otherwise known as Indonesian Rosewood) from plantations established by the Dutch on the island of Java.
Sourced from the same tree as Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia Latifolia) although it differs, presumably because of the plantation origins and to some extent the climate, in having a broader colour range and slightly less density and hardness.
Our Sonokeling plectrums are manufactured from off cuts from musical instrument and furniture manufacturing.
Interesting Facts:
The trees grow to between 50 - 120ft with a trunk diameter of 4 - 6ft.
The tree produces a hard, durable, heavy wood that is often used in premium furniture making and cabinetry as well as for outdoor furniture. Sonokeling is also used to make Ukeleles.
Sonokeling, although only slightly softer than Ebony has a lot more abundant grain giving this plectrum superior grip. Recommended for Blues notes on electric guitar.
